“Welcome to the last big event before they throw us all in jail!” exclaimed Rage Against the Machine/Audioslave singer-guitarist Tom Morello from the main stage at Merriweather Post Pavilion on Saturday. As curator of the inaugural Power to the People festival, Morello promised “a day of peace, love, justice, and music.” He should’ve added “surprises” in there as well. The sold-out show featured sets from headliners Bruce Springsteen and Foo Fighters, along with surprise appearances from Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler during the Jack Sabbath set, Darryl ‘DMC’ McDaniels from Run-DMC joined Morello on stage during his set (as did Stephen Stills and System of a Down’s Serj Tankian) and Joan Baez joined Springsteen. The all-star finale found everyone on the bill (and then some—I see you, Scott Ian of Anthrax!) joining in to sing Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land” and Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World.”
